Technology in China
“Technology in China” is an online, visual essay that emerges as a response to being inmerse in the Chinese technological environment. The online isolation has allowed Chinese tech ecosystem to incubate away from direct influence of Silicon Valley tech giants. Just around the time these companies (such as Alibaba or Tencent) are looking for an expansion outside national borders, stark contrasts become apparent regarding production models, data collection and management, functionality and user experiences. Instead of thinking of chinese tech as bootleg versions of the Californian powerhouses, the emerging differences suggest that the abstract notion of “technological development” abides by cultural ideologies that can be found within the core of social fabric itself, and that focusing on these can shed light on how concepts such as “modernity”, “identity”, “individuality” or “authority” differ between east and west.
