Fetish: Material Conversations

This exhibition explores the concept of 'fetish' as an umbrella term that articulates the relationship between the material and the supernatural, the rational and the marginal. Historically, the fetish has been a synonym for an idol, an object of sexual desire, or an item of social value, always connecting devotion with materiality, and power with artifice. The term, which originates from the Latin facticius (artifact) and evolved through meanings of magic and deities, always denotes an irreducible materiality that pulses with spiritual, sexual, or mercantile energy.

The exhibition focuses on this principle, bringing together works from the MAMBO Collection that channel the desire, spirituality, and power inherent in the fetish. It highlights the work of artists who, despite being embedded in modern movements characterized by rationalism, approached creation from an esoteric and ancestral drive. This show is the fifth in the Collection on Stage program, which seeks to research and disseminate the museum's heritage through innovative curatorial proposals, offering alternative readings of 20th and 21st-century Colombian and international art history. Works from key MAMBO projects like the Intercol and Atenas Salons are emphasized.
