Politics of Reproduction
Politics of Reproduction is the first exhibition dedicated solely to the iconic Grabados populares (Popular Prints) series by Colombian artist Álvaro Barrios. One of the most internationally recognized living artists, Barrios fuses references from mythology, Pop culture, Surrealism, and Conceptual Art, particularly Marcel Duchamp.
The Popular Prints have been Barrios's core artistic output since 1972, with the complete series acquired by MoMA in 2004. These consist of a series of drawings and illustrations, popularly distributed by mass-market printed media such as newspapers and electricity bills. Through them, Barrios challenges the relationship between the authentic artwork and the replica, using printed distribution methods as political and poetic devices to critique the commercial value ascribed to art. His work both celebrates and criticizes mass reproduction.
The exhibition spans Barrios's output from 1972 to the present, showcasing his broad repertoire, including offset, photogravure, lithography, and screen printing.
