Studio
Studio is the second and most comprehensive posthumous solo exhibition of the Lithuanian-Colombian artist Nijolė Šivickas (1925–2018) at MAMBO, spanning six decades and over 150 artworks. Known for her reserved nature and hard-to-categorize style, her work fuses echoes of her European academic training with a fascination for pre-Columbian Andean cultures, visible in her abstract and figurative sculptures that explore existential suffering with primitive forms, close to Art Brut.
This retrospective is unconventional: sections of Šivickas’ house and studio were meticulously recreated within the museum to offer an intimate look into her creative process. By presenting the studio, a sacred space for experimentation, the exhibition reveals the obsessive and tactile nature of her work, showing the evolution of ideas from concepts to finished sculptures. The utilitarian elements and domestic mise en scène conceived by the artist are also recreated, underscoring the convergence between art and everyday life. Navigating this personal environment, visitors become voyeurs who have a deeply personal encounter with Šivickas’ artistic vision, thus transcending the traditional museum experience.
