Chronotopias

Chronotopias is the first institutional retrospective exhibition in Colombia dedicated to the visionary Argentine-born artist Silvia Rivas, who since the late 1990s has explored expanded cinema, video as a medium, and immersive environments. The title, borrowed from the Greek physics concept chronotopos ('time-space'), reflects the central focus of her work: the tension between these two dimensions.

Over 25 years, Rivas has refined her approach to time-based arts and site-responsive practices, utilizing slow motion, extended play, and time-lapse effects in complex video installations and animations. Her research addresses themes like identity, memory, stillness, and recurrence, inviting the viewer to a deep emotional connection that transcends the simple moving image. Rivas conceives her work in continuous series—from which iconic pieces like Full of Hope (2002) and Momentum (2015) are displayed—treating them as chapters of a visual story. All works were spatially re-configured to dialogue with the museum's architecture, including the debut of the work Not Me, Nor Body or Instrument, (chance and need) (2024), specially conceived for the show.
